To empower climate actions and intelligence.

Activities and events on Earth are important datasets

I shared and learned about two types of satellites: imagery and internet. Today, you and I are learning about another satellite mission – a thermal satellite for capturing high-resolution thermal dataset imagery.

The increase in Earth datasets underscores the significance of various satellite types capturing our planet's activities from space, serving purposes ranging from economic and security concerns to environmental safety.

Online data helps understand how we act, so companies can offer better products. But for real-life activities to improve our lives, we need different approaches.

Satellite VU (SatVu) a thermal satellite company

Captures the highest resolution thermal data from space for safer and sustainable earth.

The company was founded in London in 2016 and raised £30 million.

Thermal imagery is the only way to empower climate actions and intelligence.

SatVu, the pioneering British climate tech company achieved a significant development in space technology, releasing the First Light imagery from its revolutionary thermal imaging satellite.

  • In near real time, the company use infrared technology to monitor the earth and provide insights

  • This allow business to make decisions to become more environmentally friendly

This technology will play a role in assisting large companies and organizations with their ESG reporting (environmental, social, and governance).

The reasons and motive behind the thermal imagery satellite

There are continuously growing concerns that we are using way too much energy, and consequently, a lot of emissions.

Thermal imagery will help in identifying where we are wasting energy, and how changes can be made to effectively reduce wastage.

Thermal satellites can also capture images at night since they detect thermal signals, and do not use the visible light spectrum like our eyes.

The main difference between optical satellite imagery and thermal satellite imager is in the detector and sensor technology used. Thermal sensors measure radiation in the mid-wave infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Unlike optical imagery, which only outlines structures in a factory, thermal images can determine its operational status and potentially reveal the ongoing processes.

If it is a chemical manufacturing factory, thermal images can capture temperatures which may be related to specific procedures, and give insight into what is actually being produced.

Applications of Thermal imagery:

  • Thermal imagery can help identify older properties that lack thermal efficiency. The challenge for both the government and property owners lies in pinpointing those properties that excessively waste energy.

  • Understanding the scale of waste is key to making effective decisions on where to focus limited resources and implement interventions, such as modernizing and upgrading buildings, which are notoriously expensive.

  • Thermal imagery has been useful in military applications for a long time, primarily due to its ability to capture scenes at night. This capability is highly valuable for responding to situations that may occur in the darkness of night.

The future ahead

The cost of thermal and satellite technology, especially launch expenses, has significantly decreased. Numerous satellite launching companies have substantially reduced the costs associated with sending satellites into space.

SatVu has cultivated numerous commercial partners and clients. Since its inception, the company has evolved into a high-growth space tech firm. Its mission is to ensure every structure on the planet is energy-efficient, supporting the reduction of businesses' carbon footprint. The future appears promising.
