Access to space has to be affordable

Rock-it

Welcome to the rock-it economy.

Just a quick reminder: In the previous newsletter, I shared information about Onweb, a company building the space network infrastructure to access the internet from anywhere on Earth.

In today’s post, I am sharing about a different company within the space industry. It may not be new to some of you, but what they are doing is making accessibility to space affordable and sustainable, enabling others to engage in space activities that will benefit humanity on Earth.

The exploration company

The company is committed to making space accessibility affordable and sustainable. It is based in Munich, Germany, founded in 2021, and has raised $44 million in a Series A funding round. Currently, the company employs around 115 individuals.

The exploration company is not aimed at exploring space itself, but rather at making exploration accessible, affordable, sustainable, and open for other companies.

Currently, access to space is expensive, and there are few vehicles capable of transporting both cargo and humans to space.

This will impact other technological discoveries because, generally speaking, the primary barriers to technological advances are costs and regulations.

The exploration company aims to lower some of these costs for scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers, and experimenters, allowing them to continue their endeavours in space.

Think of this company as a service that offers affordable space transportation, allowing others to conduct discoveries that require microgravity conditions ( where there is a less gravity).

The company will support this purpose through their NYX vehicle, which they have developed, manufactured, and operate themselves.

What supports the company’s missions

Before we delve into details about NYX and other company information, here are some developments that reinforce the company's mission and purpose in competing within this field:

Today, there are only two space stations, with an estimated three more private space stations in 5 years. By the end of 2027, the total count is expected to reach 7 private space stations.

The space stations will be commercialized to offer services for various purposes, catering to multiple companies, including entertainment.

There are 15 planned missions to the moon and two lunar stations expected by the end of this decade.

Space exploration is projected to increase sixfold from $25 billion in 2020 to $150 billion by 2040.

How they will support space exploration

The company supports space exploration through a vehicle called NYX, which they developed, manufactured, and operate.

The vehicle's unique value proposition is its reusability and pioneering use of green propellant, the first of its kind globally.

Furthermore, it's planned to be refuelled in orbit in the future, utilizing space resources. The concept of refuelling from space resources is fascinating, isn't it?

The NYX vehicle is capable of traveling to orbit and returning to Earth. Presently, it transports only cargo, with plans to eventually carry humans in the future.

The mission scope and services:

The missions have two scopes: the first involves travel from Earth to orbit and back to Earth, with a demonstration flight scheduled for 2024. The second mission scope aims for travel from Earth to the moon and back to Earth, expected to be achieved by 2028.

Here are some of the services that can be booked based on what they are planning to do in space:

  • In-orbit demonstration: Allows for the testing of new technologies in orbit by providing space on spacecraft for experiments.

  • Microgravity experiments

  • Space station resupply

  • Manufacturing new products

  • Entertainment

  • Product placement

  • Education

  • Space Travel - coming soon

The benefits of space exploration

Let's shed light on the past benefits to humanity derived from space exploration to convince others why we should continue making access to space affordable.

Space exploration has led to advancements in everyday life, from solar panels to implantable heart monitors, from cancer therapy to lightweight materials, and from water‐purification systems improved computing systems.

It continues to drive collaborations between industries, benefiting Earth through improved technology, research, and answering fundamental questions about the Universe and life beyond our planet.

In addition, accessing lunar resources such as water and helium-3, fostering entertainment, and fuelling our curiosity to discover and seek answers about the universe.

The exploration company future

The company has signed a cargo service agreement with Axiom Space, which is in the process of constructing the first-ever commercial space station for the future.

Finally, the company offers a unique experience: the opportunity to send a small item on a journey into space and back. Items that can be flown in their vehicle include objects, documents, and postcards, which will be returned and certified upon completion.

Surprisingly, they are fully booked for 2024. It's cool to possess something that has ventured into space.

That's all for today!

Knowledge & Tips:

Is a rocket a space vehicle?

A space vehicle is the combination of a spacecraft and its launch vehicle which carries it into space.
